The Katla ice cave with kids

For many children, a super jeep crossing rivers and a walk into a glacier is the highlight of Iceland. But the tours have minimum ages, the walk is on ice with crampons, and the cave sits below one of Iceland's most active volcanoes.

Below: the minimum age for every tour, how hard it is, safety and volcano monitoring, the dark and the tight spaces, and what to pack for children.

The quick answer

Arctic Adventures, Katla FastTrack and Southcoast Adventure take children from age 6, as does the Arctic Adventures day tour from Reykjavík. Gravel Travel and Tröll take them from 8 (Tröll's own site says 6 in summer). The walk is short and beginner-friendly with crampons, and the volcano is monitored by the Icelandic Met Office, with tours stopping if activity rises. Skip it for children who fear the dark or tight spaces.

What is the minimum age for the Katla ice cave?

6 or 8, depending on the operator: 6 with Arctic Adventures, Katla FastTrack and Southcoast Adventure, 8 with Gravel Travel and Tröll Expeditions.

Ages as stated on each GetYourGuide listing. Tröll's own site says 8 in winter and 6 in summer, so check the listing for your date.

Is the Katla ice cave tour hard for children?

Not very: Arctic Adventures calls its glacier walk beginner-friendly, and the walk from the jeep is 2 to 8 minutes with Gravel Travel and about 20 with Tröll. The ground is uneven and icy, but crampons make it manageable.

Guests report the hike can be a little challenging on ice, and on some days Southcoast Adventure's route needs a few steps or ladders. For younger children, the jeep ride may be the hardest part: guests report it is bumpy, and a few mention tight seating. A 3-hour tour from Vík is far easier on a family than a 12-hour day from Reykjavík.

Is it safe to visit the Katla ice cave near an active volcano?

Yes, within the limits of any glacier trip: Katla is monitored by the Icelandic Met Office, and tours stop if activity rises. Guides choose the cave and the route each day.

Katla is one of Iceland's most active volcanoes, about 1,500 m high, with at least 20 eruptions since settlement in 874. Its last confirmed eruption began on 12 October 1918 and lasted 24 days; small events under the ice may have happened in 1955, 1999 and 2011. The cave is not inside the volcano: it sits at the snout of Kötlujökull, at the edge of the glacier, while the caldera lies under 200 to 700 m of ice up on the ice cap.

What happened in the 2011 Katla flood?

On 9 July 2011, a glacial flood (jökulhlaup) burst down the river Múlakvísl and destroyed the Route 1 bridge. It is one reason the volcano is watched so closely.

Floods like this built Mýrdalssandur, the black plain the jeep crosses, and why guides talk about Katla with respect. For children, it makes a good story on the drive, along with the folk tale that gave the volcano its name: Katla was a housekeeper with magic breeches who fled into the glacier. Ask your guide to tell it.

Is the Katla ice cave scary for claustrophobic kids?

It can be: the cave is dark and may be a narrow tunnel. Gravel Travel says its tour is not suitable for claustrophobia or a fear of the dark, and Tröll lists claustrophobia too.

The cave changes week to week, so it may be a wide opening one month and a tunnel the next. Talk to children beforehand about helmets, the dark and the dripping ice. Katla FastTrack provides headlamps, which can help. If a child is anxious, the Sólheimajökull glacier hike keeps everyone out in the open on the ice instead.

What should children wear?

The same as adults: warm, waterproof layers, hiking boots with ankle support, gloves and a hat. Crampons and helmets are provided; check the operator has them in your child's size.

Southcoast Adventure provides gloves and headwear as well. Children get cold faster when they stand still, so pack a spare layer and a snack; food and drinks are not included on most tours. The full kit list is in what to wear to the Katla ice cave.

Which Katla tour is best with kids?

For ages 6 and 7, the Arctic Adventures tour from Vík ($189), with seven departures to fit naps and meals. From age 8, every tour is open, and the Gravel Travel walk is the shortest.

Without a car, the Arctic Adventures day tour from Reykjavík takes children from 6, but 12 hours is a long day for a young child; a night in Vík is kinder (see the Katla ice cave from Reykjavík). In Vík, the Icelandic Lava Show, with real molten lava in a 50-minute show, is a good wet-weather add-on.
